3D printing is getting next level. Now we can print human body parts and our clothing. And the material of our clothing can react to other people and your environment.

What is it?

PhD Candidate Behnaz Farahi of the University of Southern California created a 3D-printed wearable outfit called ‘Cares of the Gaze’. The outfit reacts to the gaze and responds with life-like reactions. An image sensing camera can detect age, gender, and orientation of the subject's gaze. The top looks like it has tons of little feelers, but this is just 3D-printed material.

Why is it cool?

It’s cool that we can 3D-print our clothing, but I think it’s fascinating that the technology can react to other people. This is super inventive and I never had heard before that it even was possible to create clothing that moves on its own. It really helps us to connect with our surroundings. And it makes contact with other people easier.

Future growth potential

How about a world that reacts and adjust to us wherever we are? Because the world feels and reads our personalities and emotions. Maybe we would live in a perfect world. It could develop in plenty ways, als the 3D-printing of clothing could bring us far. Less product waist and children in Asia could stop working in the fashion industry.

Trend

Shifting Identities, Internet of things, togetherness and transparency are trends where we can fit the ‘Cares of the Gaze’ in.

Quality of Life

This effects the emotional-, social- and material wellbeing.
