The fun of new swimming

Swimming lessons to actually become a mermaid! Learn how to swim with a mermaid tail, how to stay under water as long as possible and how to play safely with the mermaid tail in the water. Swimming school ONDA, Beek, the Netherlands offers this mermaid swimming class. For kids and adults there are two ways to get the mermaid diploma: A four week training with four lessons of 40 minutes, or a one day training of 2 hours. After finishing a final test you will get the mermaid diploma. The regular classes cost 44,50 Euros, and when you have your own mermaid tail (costs up to 120 Euros) the lessons cost 34,50 Euros. You may only apply to the lessons when you are in possession of a swimming diploma B. Of course for boys there is a merman diploma! The tails used in the lessons are the FinFun Mermaid Tails.  

Why is it cool? 

According to the kids, who are the main target group of the swimming lessons for mermaids, being a mermaid or a merman is what every girl and boy wants in their life. They enjoy it so much and they feel special by learning how to swim as a mermaid. I think it’s cool that by this way children wil swim more. They wil be more active and they can handle the water better.  

It also is a dream of most young girls and boys to become a mermaid. They see mermaids in series and movies on television and now they can become one of them. 

Does it have future growth potential? 

I don’t think this will become something big, just because of the costs. The tail is over a hundred Euros and kids will eventually become older and no longer enjoy being a mermaid. But at the moment it is still a popular class. Therefore other swimming schools maybe will begin offering the lessons too. This might lead to a reduction in price because of the competition between swimming schools. Though you will earn a mermaid diploma, it wont be a diploma of actual value. But it fits in the need of new experiences and it would be fun if it can expand in this opportunity.

The kids clearly switch their identity; a normal child turns into a mermaid. It also fits perfectly in the Experience economy trend.
